There are days when you wonder if anyone else in the computer business knows what they are doing.
I have a Nexus 7 which is a quite nice piece of kit. And I use it for watching videos. And, sometimes, it is inexplicably temperamental about the video formats it shows. I have some files in MPEG-4 format which work quite well, in the particular H.264 version. And they can be shrunk by about 10% by being converted to DivX. Since the machine has no provision for a micro-SD card, which could add 32GB, I suppose 10% could matter.
There's a movie viewer which claims to play DivX video, but sometimes it doesn't. Do a bit of Googling, and you will be told to convert DivX to some other format.
This is what works for me.
1: Convert to DivX.
2: Change the file extension from .divx to .avi
3: Transfer to the Nexus 7 and play with the MX Player
Simples.
But it turns out that you have to alter a default setting in Windows 7, so that you can see and edit file extensions. A Google search gets you to Microsoft's own website, and shows you instructions for Windows 7, and those instructions are wrong.
Yes, you open the Control Panel, that hasn't changed. But the Folder Options applet is listed at the top level, not buried behind the non-existent Appearance and Personalization. I suspect it's an instruction for a previous version that didn't get checked for UI changes before it was published. Or have I made some Theme choice which rearranges all this? It's weird if it does.
Don't believe everything you read on the Internet.
A Wolf In the Fold

Enter, pursued by a bear.
Oh dear, so that's what that button does.
Wolf Baginski here, being as real, I suppose, as anyone on the Internet can be. I have, you understand, standards, and some things are just wrong. There are hard choices, and evil ones. We all want to enjoy life, but I want to be able to live with the consequences.
I would be ashamed to promote the policies which some politicians choose.
Maybe that is why I am not a politician.
